a bomb is dropped from a plane in level flight at a speed of 40m/s at height 490m above the ground. how far ahead of the point of dropping will it hit the ground?

The bomb would initially be having velocity same as that of plane i.e. 40 meter/sec.
And after it is dropped it will attain speed in vertical direction due to acceleration caused by gravity but its speed in the horizontal direction will remain same.
Height of the plane is given 490 metre so time of fall will be,
s= u*t  + g *t*t/2
where u=0 then
490=(9.8/2)*t*t

490=4.9*t*t

so t=10 sec

and in this time,
horizontal displacement=horizontal-speed * time
                                     =(40 meter/sec)* 10 sec
                                     =  400 meter
